Ward is recognized as part of Chicago's activist <a title="http://www.thehistorymakers.com/glossary/glossarytext.asp?index=" href="http://www.thehistorymakers.com/glossary/glossarytext.asp?index=242">Black Arts Movement</a>. In this context, she founded the nonprofit Kuumba Theatre in <a title="http://www.thehistorymakers.com/timeline/index.asp?string=" href="http://www.thehistorymakers.com/timeline/index.asp?string=1968">1968</a>.
